School of Biological Sciences

The Coral Reef Ecosystems (CRE) Laboratory, part of the School of Biological Sciences, conducts marine research and teaching into the diverse marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs both in Australia and worldwide. The CRE laboratory is focused on unlocking secrets behind the physiology and ecology of coral reefs, as well as understanding the challenges that coral reefs are currently facing from anthropogenic ocean warming and acidification. From time to time, the laboratory is involved in marine research that focuses on the other ecosystems than coral reefs.  The Laboratory includes a population of senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and research higher degree students who are involved in exciting evidence-based research.  The CRE laboratory is an exciting place to work, with a rich combination of laboratory and field investigation.

The role

This role incorporates the care and maintenance of a major climate change research installation on Heron Island as well as the analysis of data and samples on campus at St Lucia.

The role will be responsible for maintaining and cleaning the system, collecting and preserving carbonate chemistry samples, running an alkalinity titrator, calibrating and maintaining several instruments, working with engineers on the custom built systems, lab work, boating and diving, assisting researchers in experiments as directed and problem solving.

Applicants should note that this work involves manual handling tasks. This position requires frequent travel and will regularly be required to work on rotation as part of a two member team, with each staff member spending approximately three weeks at Heron Island Research Station (HIRS), followed by three weeks in Brisbane (UQ St Lucia). See position description for further information.

The person

Due to the diverse nature of the role, applicants will need to be able to work independently in remote locations for extended periods of time, whilst also developing close working relationships with other team members. High level interpersonal, written, oral communication and time management skills, plus the ability to problem solve and learn new processes quickly, are also required.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment at HEW Level 5 for 12 months.  The remuneration package will be in the range $64,597 - $72,348 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $75,579 - $84,648 p.a.).
