PhD opportunities exist within the Energy and Poverty Research Group, The University of Queensland, for full time students undertaking research projects focused on the interconnected nature of poverty, energy and development, and to explore sustainable energy solutions tailored to local socio-economic and ecological contexts. The EPRG is administered by the School of Chemical Engineering.

Energy Poverty

Access to modern, reliable and affordable forms of energy has been recognised as critical to human development. The United Nations has declared 2015-25 as the Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (United Nations, 2012). Yet, millions of people remain energy poor for various institutional, socio-cultural, economic and legal reasons.

Globally, more than 1 billion people lack access to electricity and approximately 2.5 billion people use unclean, traditional solid fuels such as firewood, dung and charcoal for cooking.

The Energy and Poverty Research Group

The University of Queensland responded to the UN’s call for global action by setting up the Energy and Poverty Research Group (EPRG) in 2014. It is an interdisciplinary initiative, administered by the School of Chemical Engineering, whose vision is to undertake pioneering research that can generate evidence-based data to influence policy, business models, and community behaviour.

Whilst based in Australia, EPRG’s multidisciplinary teams are working to address energy access challenges in South and Southeast Asia (including, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Cambodia and Papua New Guinea).

We work across the disciplines of engineering, economics and business, communications and social change, social sciences, and human and behavioural sciences, to support enabling environments to effect change in the way energy is understood and applied both in theory and practice. Bringing together cross-disciplinary research capability and innovation, the group explores sustainable, reliable and affordable energy solutions tailed to a variety of regions.

Whilst still in the start-up phase, the EPRG has graduated three PhD students with eight students currently enrolled in five schools across the University. The EPRG is supported by 1 Research Fellow and 9 academic research leaders and advisors.

The role

To join a team of researchers at UQ undertaking research projects focused on the interconnected nature of poverty, energy and development, and to explore sustainable, reliable and affordable energy solutions that are tailored to local socio-economic and ecological contexts.

Although not limited to the following thematic areas, interest and or experience in one or more of the following topics is particularly relevant:

  • Public policy and energy governance
  • Spatial modelling, GIS and environmental management
  • Energy resources and technology systems analysis to meet growing energy demand
  • Techno-economic assessments of sustainable energy interventions

 

The person

The applicant should possess excellent academic credentials, including a primary Honours degree qualification (Honours Class 1 or Class 2A) or a Master’s degree in a relevant professional area.

You should demonstrate good oral and written communication skills, interest in high quality research, along with self-motivated and independent thinking.

You should have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, as well as undertake extended fieldwork in a variety of socio-cultural settings.

Remuneration

This is a full-time PhD program for Australian Postgraduate Award students, or international scholarship recipients. The tax-free stipend is $30,000 p.a for 3 years, with the possibility of a 6 month extension.
