As you may be aware, UQ Jobs was temporarily taken offline due to a data security breach at PageUp – our third party recruitment platform.

PageUp’s security consultants have confirmed that they have not identified any further threats and that PageUp is safe to use. Based on the outcome of that investigation and additional security improvements by PageUp to guard against similar incidents in the future, UQ is satisfied with the security of the system and has reinstated access to UQ Jobs.

As a safety measure, UQ requested a reset of all user passwords. In order to protect your personal account details, the next time you login to UQ Jobs, you will be prompted to set a new password. As good practice, UQ recommends that you do not re-use passwords, or use the same password across multiple systems.

More information about the data breach can be found on the PageUp website.

The School of Biomedical Sciences

The University of Queensland School of Biomedical Sciences is a distinguished centre for teaching and research in the academic disciplines of Anatomy, Developmental Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology and Pathology. The School has more than 40 full-time research and teaching staff and is one of the largest Schools of its type in Australia. It has links to other prestigious research centres on the St Lucia campus including the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), the Institute of Molecular Bioscience (IMB) and the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN). Our diverse research provides an exciting environment for national and international research fellows and higher degree students. It is concerned with advancing the understanding of how cellular mechanisms contribute to the function of the human body in health and disease.  Details of the research interests of academic staff may be accessed on the school’s web site at https://biomedical-sciences.uq.edu.au/

In addition to its graduate research programs, the School teaches undergraduate students in Science, Medicine, and Health Sciences.

The role

A PhD stipend is available within the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Queensland. We are looking to recruit a highly motivated graduate student to undertake a research project which focuses on delineating novel cellular mechanisms underlying heart and renal failure and to develop novel treatment approaches for these diseases. Heart failure is becoming increasingly common due to the obesity epidemic and the ageing population. Most patients with heart failure also develop renal failure creating a vicious cycle that is harmful to both organs. When both heart and renal failure are present within the same patient it is termed the cardiorenal syndrome. Of concern, there are no effective treamtents for cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) and patients with CRS often require either transplant surgery or dialysis. Thus, development of novel treatments for cardiorenal syndrome remain an unmet clinical need. This research is conducted in collaboration with scientists and clinicians both within Australia and the USA. To obtain more information about this opportunity, please contact Dr Niwanthi Rajapakse (Senior Lecturer, School of Biomedical Sciences; n.rajapakse@uq.edu.au).

The person

The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record with 1st Class Honours degree or equivalent in Physiology, Pharmacology, biochemistry or a related discipline.

Remuneration

The stipend is equivalent to the APA rate, $26,682 per annum, (2017 rate, indexed annually). The scholarship will be for three (3) years with the possibility of two six (6)-month extensions and is subject to the UQ Research Scholarship General Conditions.
