School of Veterinary Science

The School of Veterinary Science has a rich history having been founded in 1936 and has a well-deserved reputation for graduating self-reliant, independent and highly capable veterinarians with plenty of initiative and drive. The School has high quality facilities at the UQ Gatton Campus and maintains a clinic at the Dayboro north-west of Brisbane.

The role

In this role the intern will work within the Avian and Exotic Pet Service in a combined clinical, teaching and research environment at the UQ Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Gatton. The role is expected to commence in early 2019.

The Avian and Exotic Pet Service

The Service, under the direction of Associate Professor Bob Doneley, sees exclusively avian and exotic patients (including wildlife), with a busy caseload (in 2018 we saw 860 birds, 130 reptiles and 440 small mammals). The Service is currently staffed by two full-time veterinarians (one specialist, one resident) and a full-time experienced veterinary nurse. Final year veterinary students spend one week on the Service, consolidating their theoretical training.

The Service is well-equipped with rigid endoscopy, radiosurgery, and anaesthesia monitoring equipment. In addition there is ready access to orthopaedic equipment, diagnostic imaging (digital radiology, CT, fluoroscopy and ultrasound), flexible endoscopy, diode laser, and Force Triad Ligasure®.

The Service operates out of a purpose-built small animal hospital with two dedicated hospital wards, a procedures room and a consultation room.

The person

Applicants should possess a degree in Veterinary Science or equivalent, registrable in Queensland. The internship provides a great training position for somebody looking to consolidate their skills in the field of avian and exotics pet medicine, perhaps in preparation for examination for Membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion and actively encourages applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Please refer to the University’s Diversity and Inclusion webpage ( for further information and points of contact if you require additional support.
