Queensland Brain Institute

The Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) works to understand the development, organisation and function of the brain under physiological and pathological conditions. The QBI was established in 2003, is housed on the St Lucia campus of UQ, and it is home to more than 450 staff and students, including 41 group leaders.

Over the past decade QBI has become known as one of the world’s leading neuroscience research institutes. It played a key role in contributing to UQ attaining the highest possible score of 5 for neuroscience, in both the 2010, 2012, and 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) reviews, one of only two universities in Australia to achieve this.

Neural Migration Laboratory

The Neural Migration Laboratory is headed by Professor Helen Cooper. Prof Cooper’s research focuses on the molecular signalling systems (guidance receptors and their ligands) governing neural stem cell activity, neuronal differentiation and migration, and axon pathfinding in the embryonic brain. The laboratory also investigates the link between these molecules and autism. To address these questions she uses both developmental mouse models and in vitro culture systems.

The role

The sucesfull candidate will provide technical support for postdoctoral scientists and PhD students. This is a critical support role essential for the enduring success of a productive research team. Opportunities exist to learn a wide variety of techniques and to contribute significantly to innovative research projects.

The person

The applicants must hold a BSc (Hons) or other relevant qualification with subsequent relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. Applicants will have experience in mammalian cell culture, RNA extraction, PCR and genotyping; and western blotting and co-immunoprecipitations. 

The successful candidate will also have a methodological approach to problem solving, the capacity for forward planning and the ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary research team.

Remuneration

This is a part-time, fixed term appointment for six months at the HEW Level 5. The remuneration package will be in the range $66,347 - $74,098 p.a., FTE plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 9.5% (total package will be in the range $72,649 - $81,137 p.a. Full Time Equivalent).
